Bonsoir !

En Egypte, entre le Nil et le Gilf Kebir/Uweinat, j’ai vu beaucoup de lignes en pierres,
des tres courtes mais aussi jusqu’à une longueur de plusieurs kilometers

Heiko Riemer a publie dans „Desert Animals in the Eastern Sahara“ page 175 un article
„Prehistoric trap hunting in the eastern Saharan desert“
A re-evaluation of the game trap structures

Merci Smile  amicalement

Ursula

Egypt - Western Desert – Great Sandsea

Egypt – central Western Desert

Egypt - Assuan Nil west

Sudan – Abri Nil west

Libya - Tibesti north

Very Happy Dear Ursula,

I am unfamiliar with this type of phenomenon, and have never heard of its existence anywhere in the francophone Sahara; but I suspect that the stone lines you mentioned were used to indicate routes toward underground sources of water, springs or oasis settlements. If the stones were high enough, they might have served as a kind of corral for herds; but unless these enclosures were circular, I find that possibility unlikely.

The stone lines may also have functioned as border indicators between rival tribal territories.

Best wishes,

Tadrart

Hello Mr Anonymous

There are indeed many different forms of big, round stone structures like krals in
the sahara desert - from 10 to 100 m diameter!

I am rather interested in where else one can see these long stone line structures,
to find apparently only in the NE Sahara? There are some interesting reports
about the use of these stonelines and their positions eg

Friedrich Berger Sahara 20 / 2009 - Great Sandsea

Smile Hello Ursula,

Thanks for the photos.

I'm neither Mister nor anonymous...I'm a lady, the nickname I've chosen for this forum is Tadrart because I'm in love with the rock art of Tadrart Acacus. My name is Maria, I'm from Italy and you may call me by that name if you wish.

It seems to me that the stone lines which are NOT circular must have been used for other purposes than keeping herds in one place. They were boundary markers, perhaps, or route indicators, as I suggested in my previous post. The very short stretches of stones which Lenka mentioned are probably just the scanty remains of what were once extensive lines.

Best regards,

Tadrart/Maria

Neutral Hello Ursula,

Excuse my error in my last post: it was you who spoke about the very short rock lines, not Lenka. Sorry, I reply to a lot of posts and was distracted at that moment.

Cheers,

Tadrart
